Server admin time May 27th, 2007
I decided to take the plunge and start the move away from shared hosting to VPS.
I settled on slicehost. A lot of support is already floating around in the relatively new community and they have a pretty slick setup. Slicehost will provide me experience building web stacks, a solid community, an affordable price/upgrade path, steady resources(due to their aversion to overselling) and gentoo(the linux distro I'm most familiar with).
I have had it less than a week and managed to mess it up enough to need a clean install of gentoo.
Thankfully, slicehost management stuff makes this easy.
I have opted to try out the favored nginx/mongrel/mysql stack, more about setting that up as I sort it out(and hopefully stop breaking my server).
If you are interested in slicehost, more info is available links below(there is a wait list for new slices, but I got setup much faster than predicted).
slicehost(with referral credited to me)
slicehost(without a referral)
[Update: Still happy. Good to see slicehost engages in conversations with it's users(see comments). Also I did a little editing to clarify/tighten up the writing.]
